What is a Disability?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a disability is “any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions)”.
The World Health Organization (WHO) explains that almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life. Over 1 billion people – about 15% of the global population – currently experience disability, and this number is increasing due in part to population aging and an increase in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
Some disabilities include, but are not limited to:
Vision
Movement
Thinking
Remembering
Learning
Communicating
Hearing
Mental health
Social relationships
